GAINING EARLY AWARENESS AND READINESS IN UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS 

What is Gear Up?  The Gear Up Team is comprised of Mrs. Jessica Thrasher/Academic Interventionist, Mr. Sky Cares/College and Career Navigator, and Mr. Andrew Coffey/College and Career Navigator.  Currently, our Gear Up Classrooms are located at the Wayne County Middle School.  The Gear Up Team works together to  provide tutoring, mentoring, and college/career talks and visits.   We work with the Class of 2027, 2028, and 2029 and will continue until 2028, as we will follow these students to the high school to continue providing services. For your middle school student, we use programs like WIN Learning and Learning Blade so they can explore careers in all areas and begin to set goals for their future endeavors. We will work to help prepare your students for high school and help get them on a pathway of classes that will support their goals after high school.  When your student gets to the high school, we will offer more programs to focus on college or technical school plans. We will offer workshops for you and your family on how to pay for college or technical school such as filling out the FAFSA and applying for scholarships. 

Gear Up is also responsible for providing Junior/Senior tutors for our Middle School Classrooms.  Not only does bringing in high school tutors help with academics, but they are role models for our students. Our students have also had the opportunity to visit Somerset Community College, Lindsey Wilson College, and the University of Kentucky. In addition, our Gear Up Team is available to talk to parents at Parent Teacher Conferences, Learning Nights, and Family Nights, and most afterschool events.
