On Saturday, September 17th, the Wayne County Cross Country team hosted and participated in the 15th annual Wayne County Invitational at Cave Run Park just off Hwy 90. The race featured seven races ranging from elementary school through high school and an open race for any runners.
The course is a 5K (3.1 mile) course that winds up hills and back down around Cave Lake, then back up to a plateau for the finish line.
The girls’ varsity race started at 11:15 am and featured the lone Wayne County high school runner, Emily Shearer. Emily’s familiarity of the course benefited her run. She paced herself well up the hills and finished strong. She finished 8th place out of a total of 88 runners from 17 different schools, with a time of 22:37. Emily received a medal for finishing in the top 10.
The boys’ varsity race featured nine runners for Wayne County. The race started at 12:00pm and included 124 runners from eighteen different high schools across the state. With a very competitive field, the Wayne County runners represented the school well.
Senior Nathanael Turner, who had previously finished in the top three of previous races, finished in first place Saturday with a time of 17:27. Nathanael led most of the race and finished :35 seconds ahead of the next runner. The second Wayne County runner to finish was Freshman Caleb Sargent who finished in 23rd place with a time of 19:55. Caleb finished strong down the final stretch, passing another runner as he crossed the line.
Taren Jones, an 8th grader, was the third Cardinal to finish the race with a time of 20:00, good enough for 25th place. Sophomore Isaac Turner ran a very good race, finishing in 31st position with a time of 20:26.
Another Sophomore, Kent Guinn, ran the race in 21:45, finishing in 54th position. 8th Grader Collin Ramsey ran an excellent race, finishing 71st with a time of 23:01. Freshman Kru Abbott finished with a time of 23:27 and passed a runner down the final stretch to secure his position. Senior Seth Flynn finished with a time of 25:12 and Reese Jones ran his second race of the season, finishing with a time of 27:01.
The times for the boys were good enough to win third place for the tournament, behind winner Corbin and North Laurel.
The course at Cave Lake is a demanding 3.1 miles that tests the runners’ stamina and perseverance. The course will host another tournament on October 15th and then it will be the host site for the 2022 Super Regions on October 22, featuring Class A Region 6, Class AA Region 5, and Class AAA Region 7.
The WCHS Running Cardinals will compete again on Saturday, September 24th at the Berea Invitational.
