Kentucky identifies gifted students in grades 4-12 at any year in any of the following areas:

General Intelligence- cognitive intelligence or how your brain works

Academic Aptitude- school subjects of math, science, English language arts, & social studies

Leadership- social skills & interpersonal qualities

Creativity- divergent thinking in areas of fluency, flexibility, elaboration, & originality

Visual & Performing Arts- art, vocal music, instrumental music, dance, drama

GIFTED SERVICES 

Gifted services for students include the following as appropriate per student and per gifted category:

 

School Services – These are the gifted service options that schools provide that must be decided at the administrative level.

Appropriate Courses - Schools provide an array of courses that include advanced placement, dual credit, honors, advanced, or leveled.

Acceleration - Schools provide subject-matter acceleration and whole-grade acceleration opportunities to students who have demonstrated the need for acceleration.

Early Entrance/Exit - Schools provide early admission to school and early graduation from school to students who have demonstrated the need.

 

Regular Education Teacher Services – These are the gifted service options that classroom teachers provide based on the needs of the individual gifted students in the classroom.

Differentiation - Teachers provide a variety of differentiation methods to match the needs of gifted students so that students may learn and demonstrate their learning in a manner that best matches their identified strengths with the curriculum and allows students to move through the curriculum faster or deeper. Differentiation methods may include pre-assessment, curriculum compacting, learning contracts, flexible grouping, tiered assignments, student choice, higher order thinking and questioning strategies, and/or extensions.

 

Gifted Education Teacher Services – These are the gifted service options that the GT Teacher may provide based on the needs of the school, classroom teachers, and gifted students.

Consultation - Gifted resource teacher may provide instructional information and materials to the regular classroom teacher for use in the regular classroom setting.

Seminars - Gifted resource teacher may provide services that are discussion-based sessions on specific topics focusing on advanced content and higher level process skills.

Resource Service - Gifted resource teacher may provide services in a pullout setting. Pullouts may be a part-time grouping of students with gifted characteristics based on the interests, needs and abilities of the students. Pullouts are designed for accelerated content, special interest groups, and process skills development.

Enrichment – Gifted resource teacher may provide services that are academically-based activities, programs, or competitions that may be offered before, during, or after school hours. These services may also be provided by other teachers. 

Travel Study Options – Gifted resource teacher may provide services that are academically-based domestic or international travel and which may result in high school or university course credit.
