High School Baseball Pick up Three More Wins
Linda Jones

The Wayne County High School Baseball team picked up 3 more wins. They traveled to North Laurel on April 12th and won 7-5 on the road. The Bat Cards also picked up 2 district wins after the defeated Somerset Christian twice. The Bat Cards will play on the road at Madison Southern on Friday, April 19th and play at home against McCreary Central on Monday, April 22.

Cards defeat Jaguars.

Wayne County traveled to North Laurel on Friday night despite it being a mostly rainy and cold spring day.  The Jaguars new turf field allowed the game to be played.  North Laurel was forced to play their early season games on the road while completion of the all turf field was being done.  The Jaguars had won their previous two home games and the Cardinals looked to give the Jaguars their first home loss on the new turf.

The visiting Cardinals got 1 run in the first inning when Jentry was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single by Palmer Smith.

North Laurel’s Carter Kelley entered the game leading the state with a .629 batting average.  Gage Gregory started on the mound for Wayne County and gave up a leadoff single to Kelley.  The Jaguars picked up 2 runs in the bottom of the first, giving them a 2 to 1 lead after 1 inning.

The Cardinals went scoreless in the second inning and the Jaguars were able to pick up 2 runs in their half of the inning to extend the Jaguar lead 4 to 1.

Wayne County chipped away at the lead in the third inning.  Dylan Tucker singled to center and Jentry Keith was hit by a pitch.  Cooper Stockton’s hit to third was mishandled by the third baseman that allowed Tucker and Keith to score.  North Laurel led 4 to 3.

Relief pitchers Ryan Coffey, Riley Jones, and Dylan Tucker did a great job to slow down the North Laurel offense.  The Jaguars went scoreless in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

The Cardinals capitalized on this by continuing to score runs.  Caleb Sargent led off the fourth inning and singled to center.  Next batter Gage Gregory was hit by a pitch.   Sargent stole third and Gregory stole second and later scored on a single by Tucker.  The Cardinals took the lead for the first time in the game, 5 to 4.

The Cardinals managed to pick up another run in the fifth inning when Sargent reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Gregory single to center field.  The Cardinals led 6 to 4.

After a scoreless sixth inning for the Cardinals, they put one more insurance run on the board in their final at bat in the seventh inning.  Riley Jones walked to start the inning and Sargent singled to center.  Gregory doubled to centerfield to score Jones to give the Cardinals their seventh run of the game.

Trailing 7 to 4, the Jaguars had one final hope in the bottom of the seventh.  Tucker walked the leadoff batter who stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a Cardinal’s error.  Tucker settled down and struck out the next batter and got two ground balls to end the game.   As the final out was recorded, lightning appeared in the sky and a downpour began.  The Cardinals win the game by the score of 7 to 5 for their fifth win in a row.

The Cardinals improve to 8 and 9 on the season with two important district games on Monday April 15 at Southwestern and then at home on Tuesday April 16.

Ryan Coffey picked up the win, pitching 4 innings of relief, giving up 6 hits and 2 earned runs with 0 walks and 2 strikeouts.  Gregory pitched 1 inning, giving up 3 hits and 2 earned runs with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.  Jones pitch 2/3 of an inning, giving up 0 hits, 0 runs and 2 walks.  Tucker pitched 1 1/3 innings with 0 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, and 1 strikeout.

Offensively for the Cardinals, Tucker went 2 for 4 at the plate, with 1 run scored, 1 RBI, and 1 stolen base.  Sargent went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 1 stolen base.  Gregory went 2 for 3 with 1 run scored, 1 stolen base and 2 RBI’s.  Gyson Rains went 1 for 4  in the game.  Palmer Smith went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI and 2 walks.  Jones went 1 for 2 with 1 run scored and 2 walks.  Jentry Keith scored twice and was hit by a pitch twice.

Bat Cards pick up second district win.

An easy first game win against Somerset Christian may have caused the Cardinals to start the second game a little lackadaisical.  In the Cardinals first inning, they went scoreless, sending only 4 batters to the plate to start the game.

The Cougars scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning due to back-to-back errors to start the game.  Senior Ryan Coffey started the game and despite the shaky defense to start the game, Coffey settled in and prevented any further damage.

The bottom half of the lineup got the offense going in the second inning as Palmer Smith, Cooper Stockton, and Riley Jones each drew a walk.  Smith scored on a passed ball and Caleb Sargent followed with a single to re-load the bases.  Gage Gregory grounded out to third base and scored Stockton on the play for the Cardinals second run.  Dylan Tucker drew a walk to load the bases again.  The big blow of the game came off the bat of Jentry Keith.  Keith doubled to left center scoring Sargent, Stockton, and Tucker.  Gyson Rains followed with a double as well to score Keith.  The Cardinals scored 6 runs in the second inning to lead 6 to 3.

Coffey went on to pitch 3 more innings, sitting down the Cougars in order.

The Cardinal offense continued to roll, scoring 7 runs in the third inning and 3 runs in the fourth inning.  The Bat Cards win 16 to 3 for their second district win and their fourth win in a row this season.

Gyson Rains went 3 for 4 in the game with 2 RBI’s.  Cooper Stockton went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s.  Caleb Sargent went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.  Jentry Keith went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 5 RBI’s.  Gage Gregory went 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored, 2 walks, and 2 stolen bases.  Palmer Smith went 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 walks.  Dylan Tucker went 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, 1 walk, and 1 stolen base.  Riley Jones had 2 walks and scored twice.  Pinch runner Jadyn Pendleton scored twice.

Coffey picked up his team leading fifth win of the season, going 4 innings, allowing 2 hits and 0 earned runs with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.  Dylan Tucker pitched 1 inning, allowing 0 hits and 0 walks with 1 strikeout.

The Cardinals get closer to the .500 mark with their 7 win against 9 losses on the season.

Cardinals cruise to victory over Cougars.

After a slow start this season, the Bat Cards are back on the winning track, winning 3 of their last 4 games heading into last week’s 48th District action against Somerset Christian.

Senior Dylan Tucker took the mound for Wayne County and pitched a perfect game for the Cardinals, going 3 innings allowing 0 hits, 0 runs, and 0 walks with 6 strikeouts.  Tucker faced the minimum number of batters in his three innings pitched, throwing only 37 pitches.

Offensively, the Bat Cards put up big numbers to support Tucker.  Wayne County scored 3 runs in the first inning, 4 runs in the second inning and 8 runs in the third inning for a 15 to 0 shutout.

Palmer Smith and Jentry Keith both went 2 for 2.  Smith scored once and had 3 RBI’s while Keith scored 3 times and drove in 3 runs.  Designated hitter Dawson Pyles went 1 for 2, scored 1 run and drove in 2.  Gyson Rains added to his team leading batting average by going 1 for 2 in the game with 2 RBI’s.  Gage Gregory went 1 for 2 with 1 walk and 1 HBP and scored 3 runs.  Caleb Sargent went 1 for 3 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI, and 2 stolen bases.  Tucker went 1 for 2 with 3 runs scored and 1 walk.  Riley Jones, Cooper Stockton, and Jadyn Pendleton each scored 1 run for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals continued their winning streak by defeating the Cougars by the score of 15 to 0 and pick up their first win of the district.
