WCHS Girls Tennis program having terrific season

The Wayne County High School Girls Tennis Team is experiencing a terrific winning season with an overall win-loss record of 13-1 currently.  “It’s the best season the girls have had since I’ve been coaching the past 8 years. Our next best overall season was back in 2019 when the overall record was 12-3.

Coach Sexton attributes the winning results they are having to “the dedication of the girls coming to practice and working hard.” Last year was their weakest season (with Covid restrictions), but Sexton picked up four girls that were just starting out. They worked really hard both out of season and in season in order to make it into this season’s starting rotation of six.

Sexton has 18 players currently giving their best on the team. He has five seniors – Macy Weaver, Maggie Jackson, Amber Jones, Riley Hicks, and Sil Van Willigen.  Senior Macy Weaver is considered his number one player having been on the team since seventh grade. She will be playing doubles with another strong player, Senior Riley Hicks at region. Likewise, Seniors Amber Jones and Maggie Jackson (who has been playing since her freshman year) will be the second doubles team to have the honor of playing at region.

He said Sil Van Willigen is an exchange student and is somewhat new to the sport. “She’s so tickled with our team’s success, that she is going back to the Netherlands and teach her brother and sister how to play tennis. She has done really well.”

The number one singles player is Junior Jaylen Campos. The number two singles player is her sister, Freshman Jaiden Campos.

“We can only take six players to region,” explained Coach Sexton. Regional competition will be held May 16th at Danville. If they win they will return to the next level of competition.

One of the highlights of the season that the girls were particularly proud of was to have defeated Casey County on April 28. “It was a huge win 7-2 over Casey County,” said Girls Tennis Coach Ronnie Sexton. “Casey County is always super good so that win was very rewarding.”

“We’ve been practicing five days a week since February 15,” said Coach Sexton. “We’ve had some games cancelled and they have several to make up this week. On Saturday, April 30th, they were playing West Jessamine, who they were supposed to have played a week earlier. That match resulted in another win for the Wayne County girls at 7-2. On Monday, May 2nd, the girls defeated Lincoln County 8-1 at home.

Congratulations to this team for their efforts and winning spirit. The tennis program’s goal for the future is to get lights for their courts located on campus.
