Wayne County Runners do well at Southern Harrier Classic hosted by Southwestern

Middle School Boys Team

Wayne County Cross Country season got underway with the Wayne County Middle School Team placing first overall at the 24th Annual Southern Harrier Classic on September 11th.

        Congratulations to Wayne County’s Cross Country Runners that competed in Somerset this past weekend. The Middle School Boys team brought home 1st Place. They were led By Taren Jones who finished 8th place with a time of 12:23 and Collin Ramsey who finished 10th with a time of 13:12. The middle school boys’ team also includes: Kru Abbott, Palmer Smith, Skylar Jackson, and Colson Vaughn.

         On the Girls side, Emily Shearer finished individually in 3rd Place out of 19 runners in the Girls 7th and 8th grade category, with a time of 14:24. Abbygale Humphrey also competed in the competition.

          “Both the boy’s and girl’s race distance is a 3k or 1.8 miles” for the seventh and eighth graders, explained WCMS Cross Country Coach Trevor Shearer.

           At the high school level, Junior Nathan Smith led Wayne County placing 17th out of 66 runners. He passed the finish line with a time of 20:21.58. Wayne County High School Junior Seth Flynn placed 62nd with a time of 28:51.56. Wayne County did not have a high school female in the varsity competition.

           The elementary races are broken down into four different categories and Wayne County placed in three of the four events. In event five which is  a 1.1 mile distance for girls in grades 4-6, their average scores placed them in third place with a time of 10:45.33. Braylee Kidd placed sixth with a time of 9:23:65 out of 64 girls. Jenna Sexton followed at 16th with a time of 10:18:80. Cora Roe placed 25th, Addyson Upchurch placed 29th, Ally Kate Cross was 33rd, and Breelee Thompson was 46th.

            In event 8 which is a 1.1 mile race for boys in grades K-3, the Wayne County runners placed third overall. Their average time was 9:43:81.  Ryker Parmley placed first individually out of 72 runners with a time of 8:25:83. Jase Sexton was 9th, followed by Jett Sexton who was 19th, Wyatt Parker was 22nd, and Eli Gibson placed 27th. Other local runners in this popular category were: Sebastian Houk, Jake Kilburn, Paxton Parmley, Joseph Roe, Lochlan Phillips, Honor Phillips, Forrest Thompson, Oliver Pyles, Alexander Leverton, and Carter Brown.

            In event 7 which was the girls 1.1 mile race for grades K-3, the Wayne County team placed fifth with an average time of 12:18:53. Maggie Kidd placed 6th with a time of 10:01.32 out of 71 girls. Ryver Ramsey was 21st, and Larisa Cross was 30th. Other Wayne County girls competing included: Tyler Grace Bertram, Logan Parker, Kate Brown, Tralee Thompson, and Kylie Askins.

           Zane Upchurch placed second individually in Event 6 for boys 1.1 mile run in grades 4-6, with a time of 8:06.67.  There were 62 runners participating in this race. Owen Harris placed 19th, Jackson Walcott was 37th and Tate Bertram placed 43rd in that category.    

           All three school levels will be competing on Saturday, September 18th at home at Cave Lake. The public is invited to attend and cheer for the Cards.
