Board of Education approves construction managerial company for new elementary school building project

     The Wayne County Board of Education met Thursday, July 15th, continuing to make plans for the construction of a new elementary building, with the help of federal COVID relief money.

     The board approved Alliance Construction for the construction managerial services. The school district has chosen Alliance Construction for the past 25 to 30 years, since they have been a consistent and reliable partner in school building projects. Two other firms – Codell and ABLE Construction Management firms were also considered.

       Five different architectural firms are being considered for the elementary building project and a decision will be made at next month’s board meeting on which one will be selected for the job.

      Several pay applications were approved for renovations to the Monticello Elementary Building project, as well, as that project concludes.

       In other business:

        *Two Wayne County School teachers were recognized for being named a Valvoline Teacher Achievement Award recipient. Bell Elementary Math Intervention Teacher Jamie Reagan is a 2022 recipient in the elementary category and Wayne County High School Teacher Jared Criswell was named a 2021 recipient in the high school category. They are among an exclusive group of 24 teachers selected across the state, who have received this professional recognition.

        *Approved an amended 2021-22 Salary Schedule that includes a COVID related stipend for current school employees. The board also agreed to extend the ten COVID emergency days for employees into the upcoming school year, if needed.

        *Approved an invoice to Conley Gregory Construction for professional services regarding the concession and restroom project at the Track and Soccer Field Construction Project.

         *Approved a School Security Funds request in the amount of $84,791 for door security at Monticello Elementary and WC Middle School.

           *Approved a contract with SMART Systems for sanitation and cleaning supplies in the school kitchens.

            *The board met in executive session to discuss pending litigation. When they resumed the meeting, the board approved a resolution to participate with the Council for Better Education in a lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of House Bill 563, which provides private school tax credits.
