Wayne County Middle School stays positive with student and staff recognitions

Asst. Principal Chris Patton presents Terri Fairchild with her award

Without daily in-person learning, staff and students have had to re-learn how they teach and learn. Overall, students and staff members have done a tremendous job acclimating to the COVID-19 guidelines. But, it has not been an easy road. Local schools provide a safe and nurturing environment for students. Educators miss the face to face communication with their students. Likewise, students have done the best they can do through virtual learning, with parents and grandparents going the extra mile to supervise their studies.

Several months ago, the Wayne County Middle School started doing weekly drawings as a way of recognizing star students who were putting forth that extra effort to complete all assignments, on time and in all subjects for the week.

“We received several heart-felt "Thank Yous" and were very pleased with the impact it was having on our students and on our teachers,” said WCMS Principal Melissa Gossage. “Some students had never won anything before. They would come in and be so excited to make their selection from an assortment of prizes. As a staff, we were always excited to see who had won and to see them excited about their reward for their hard work.”

“Then when talking with our Leadership Team one afternoon and discussing how we could better let our teachers know they were appreciated during such a trying time in their careers, we recognized we could do something very similar to what we were doing with our students.  We would hold a weekly drawing for our staff.”

Educators nominate one another for the hard work that they see each other doing throughout the week. Certified and classified nominations are placed into a specified box. The principal draws two classified and two certified staff members’ names each week.  Members of the school district have graciously donated some awesome gifts as well as several generous donations from numerous community partners.

“It has been so rewarding to share with our staff just how much our school district and our community appreciates and respects the job they are doing and the efforts they are making to continue to educate our students during the COVID pandemic.  Wayne County Middle School, we are CARDINAL PROUD of YOU!”
