Lady Cardinal Basketball season delayed with one senior already signed with college team

The Lady Cards will begin their season in an unusual way. They will be kicking off the local basketball season without a large crowd cheering them on from the bleachers, due to COVID safety restrictions. They had planned to launch the local basketball season on January 7th, however, that game has been cancelled due to COVID. Instead, another game with Metcalfe County has been added on Saturday, January 9th at the WCMS with JV playing at 2:00 p.m. and varsity at 3:30 p.m.

While the gymnasium will be much quieter as the season begins, with no general admission, each player from both teams will be allowed four vouchers to be used towards admission tickets for both the girls and boys basketball games this season. Temperature checks will be conducted at the door for the limited number of fans admitted. Home games at the Rodney Woods Gymnasium will be broadcast through rotating coverage from local radio stations and video coverage will be streamed live on the school district website and on the cable stations through Community Telecom Services.

There won’t be any college recruiters visiting the games, checking out student athleticism on the court since they are not allowed to be on high school campuses for face to face recruiting currently, due to their pandemic safety regulations.

In the midst of all this, one of Wayne County Lady Cardinals have already committed to play at the college level. In November, a private in-house ceremony was held at school to recognize Senior Macey Blevins. It was a very happy occasion, not only for Blevins and her parents, Angie and Shane Blevins, but for her fellow players and local coaches who know how much work she has put into her basketball career.

Wayne County Schools Athletic Director Kevin Jones congratulated Macey and extended the school’s gratitude to her for being such an excellent student and athlete. “Western is getting a fantastic player, but they are getting an even better person.”

Her drive and strong work ethic has earned her all kinds of awards and recognitions, including the All Time Leading Scorer for Girls Basketball in Wayne County with over 2,000 points.  “She has an innate desire to compete at the highest level. She’s a great teammate. She led us in assists last year. She works hard on offense and defense and makes everyone on the team better,” said Lady Cardinal Coach Mark McKinley. “That just speaks to her on court presence. She’s an even better young lady off the court.”

Blevins holds school records for the most single game blocks, single game scoring, and is tied for the most assists in a game. She earned All-State First Team, 12th Region All-Tournament Team, and 12th All-Region Team.

In addition, with her AAU team, Kentucky Premier, she was a state championship and won multiple tournament titles. Wayne County High School Assistant Principal Jarrad Parmley, who is co-founder of Kentucky Premier, has trained Blevins individually for four years. He was especially proud of her success, noting how passionate she is about the game and what a strong work ethic she has that has led to her successes.

Parmley explained that she has been on the traveling team for six years. She is one of the few players to play on the Nike EYBL Team, which is a very prestigious honor. She got a lot of exposure from that opportunity.

“She is one of the most fundamentally strong players and has a high skill set and IQ,” said Parmley, who trains several of the Lady Cardinals through Kentucky Premier. “These kids put a lot of work in to become better players that people don’t know about.”

In the classroom, Blevins has earned a spot on the All A Honor Roll and was named to the Academic Hall of Fame at Wayne County High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has a 4.1 grade point average.
