Boys Basketball beats Southwestern to win the 48th District Championship

The Boys Basketball team rallied to beat Southwestern 77-76 this past Friday, February 28th. Wayne County was able to secure the first round bye in the tournament while Southwestern had to play an extra game against McCreary County. Southwestern barely won that game 48-45 and only had three days to rest up for their next big game against Wayne. Wayne County had taken those three days and practiced really hard for the 48th District Championship game. Wayne County came in as the favorite to win but found themselves trailing to Southwestern for most of the game. Southwestern would be ahead by as much as ten or twelve throughout the game but Wayne County would put up an excellent fight and come back in the fourth. Wayne County and Southwestern would trade blows in the fourth quarter, going back and forth on who would lead the game. With about 13 seconds left in the game, Wayne County had possession of the ball and were tied with Southwestern 76-76. Coach Woods called a timeout and drew up a play that the team would run with only a few seconds to go in the game. When the timeout was over, Wayne Counties team went out onto the floor and waited for the ball to be inbounded. Thomas Spencer got the ball at the top of the key and waited for the time to tick down. With about 8 seconds left in the game Thomas drives into the paint and pulls two defenders on him. The ball is then kicked out to Bryson Tucker in the corner and Bryson pulls a three pointer with only 4 seconds remaining. His shot would be just off and Thomas would be there to rebound the ball. As Thomas is rebounding the ball, he turns and tries to throw up a last second shot but two of Southwesterns players grab onto him and foul him while he was trying to shoot. So with 1.2 seconds left on the clock, Spencer heads to the line to shoot two crucial free throws. Thomas gets to the freethrow line and sinks the first one to give the lead to Wayne County 77-76. Spencer then goes to shoot the second one and it barely rolls off the rim and into a Southwestern players hands. Southwestern then calls a timeout but the rebound that Southwestern had to take took some time off the clock. The clock now read 1 second remaining. Southwesterns coach draws up a play for his team to try and execute before the time runs off the clock. After the timeout, Southwestern has to inbound the ball on the opposite of the court. So the player inbounding the ball throws the ball from one side of the court to the other and hopes that one of his players will be able to catch it and turn around and shoot it. As the ball is in the air Thomas Spencer jumps up to then bat it away from any player around him and the clock expires with Wayne County being victorious. A total of four players were named from Wayne County for the All District Team. These players were, Senior Kameron Gehring, Senior Thomas Spencer, Senior Chandler Humble, and Senior Reese Sexton. Kameron had 15 points, Thomas had 25 points, Chandler had 11 points, and Reese had 16 points during the game. This game was a hard fought and a classic showing of the Wayne County and Southwestern rivalry as both teams really played the best they could for all four quarters. After winning the 48th District, Wayne County will head to Pulaski County Gym this Thursday to play Danville in the first round of the 12th Regional Tournament. This game is scheduled to tipoff at 8:00, so come out and support your Boys Basketball Team!!!
