The First Annual Kenny Davis Classic was Successful

The first annual Kenny Davis Classic was held at Wayne County High School on February 1, 2020. This event was also a double header with the boys playing Middlesboro and the girls playing Mercer. The boys beat Middlesboro 57-44 and the girls lost to Mercer 59-49. Thomas Spencer lead the team in scoring for the boys putting up 31 points.

Thomas Spencer got player of the game for the boys and was recognized by Basketball Stand Out Kenny Davis after the games. Academic Awards for the Boys Team went to: Austin Bell, Cameron Gehring, Chandler Humble, Reese Sexton, and Bryson Tucker. Haleigh Criswell received the Academic Award for the Girls Team. Macey Blevins was recognized for being All-Time leading Lady Cardinal scorer at the January 27th game against South Laurel.

 It was a privilege to have Kenny Davis at the doubleheader. The former Cardinal lead the Kentucky High School scoring with 32 points in 1966. His record at Georgetown College was 3,003 points scored in college. In 1971, he played on the Pan-American Team in 1971, served as Captain of the 1972 USA Olympic Basketball Team, played basketball in five continents in 26 countries, inducted into the 1992 Wayne County High School Basketball Hall of Fame, was the Torch Bearer for the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996, inducted into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame in 2003, and still holds the scoring record of 61 points in a game before the three point shots were added. It was an honor for the local ball players to be recognized by the famous Wayne County Cardinal.
