The Wayne County High School Cross Country Team ran their hardest at the Super Regionals this past Saturday, October 26th, which they hosted at their home base at Cave Lake.
Going into the race, Wayne County was projected to finish 4th place team overall and ended up finishing as Regional Runner Up's. This great performance earned the team a spot to run in the State competition which will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park on Saturday, November 2..
Wayne County's top five runners that made up the team included, Senior Nathan West (6th), Senior Jacob Morgan (10th), Senior Nicholas Shearer (15th), Nathan Smith (17th), and Seth Flynn (61st). This gave the team a score of 101 points and would barley edge out Bell County who finished with a score of 102. In girls varsity competition, seventh grade runner Kaydynce Byrd finished 30th overall, with a time of 24:27, and just missed out on qualifying for State.
There were 43 high schools represented for regions 5 Class 2A, 6 Class 1A, 7 Class 3A. The course itself held up really well despite the wet conditions and the many teams that ran last Saturday.
Coach Kevin Jones was really proud of all the runners, especially the seniors. He said that, "The team practices five days a week, three times at Cave Lake and two times around the schools campus." His expectations for state is to, "Get a lot better this week and see how all their work falls into place at the state meet".
He expects next year to be a, "re-loading year" because four of the varsity runners will be graduating this year.
Coach Jones feels good about the future stating, "The elementary program grew in a lot of runners for both boys and girls. These folks had a lot of success and the future is looking bright for the cross country program."
(L-R:) Sophomore Aaron Hesse, Senior Adam Sawyer, Senior Nathan West, Senior Jacob Morgan, Senior Nicholas Shearer, Freshman Nathan Smith, Freshman Seth Flynn accepted the trophy after the race.
