Two members of the Wayne County Track Team recently competed at the state track and field
championships held at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track Facility.
D'Angelo Dixson, a member of the Class of 2019, finished seventh in the state in the 300 meter
hurdles. He competed in the Class AA competition.
Dixson has been a member of the Wayne County team for four years.
Wayne County competitor Braedon Sloan finished 17th in Class AA competition in the boys 100
Both events were held on May 31 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
It was a rewarding experience for both runners, especially Dixson who earned the trip to the
state in his final season of track. Dixson had the fastest time at the region to advance to state
“This felt rewarding, particularly since we don't have a track or hurdles at Wayne County,” said
Dixson. “You have to work twice as hard as the others who have those places to practice.”
Dixson has been a member of the track team at Wayne County during middle school and for a
couple of years in high school. He was unable to compete in track during his junior season because of an
injury he sustained in football.
The track team competes in a parking lot on campus, doing intervals of 100 meters. Dixson
noted that they don't practice hurdles, so the brunt of his experience on hurdles came from practices
right before their meets.
“We would get to our track meets and you could practice hurdles right before the race, so I
would always practice them then,” he said. “Then, I would just use my speed to compete.”
Dixson, like other athletes involved in the track program, is excited about the ongoing
construction of a track on the Wayne County campus. He looks forward to seeing it completed.
“It will be rewarding to see that track constructed,” he said.
