Playgrounds are expensive in today's world, so Monticello Elementary is thankful for grant funds that they have recently received to help renovate their existing playground. All contributions towards this effort are appreciated.

Most recently in this on-going effort, Monticello Elementary was awarded the $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant. This grant, funded by the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, has impacted over 8,000 schools across the United States. Schools are awarded this money to create projects such as reading gardens and playgrounds.

Lowe’s practices community involvement in many cases. The company believes that building relationships within the community is just as important as stand retail services. The company works with natural disaster relief and takes an active role in improving community schools. When it comes to awarding grants, Lowe’s focuses on the following: “technology upgrades, tools for STEM programs, facility renovations and safety improvements.” “At a time when schools are struggling to support the basic needs of their students, the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) recognizes the importance of financial support,” according to the Toolbox of Education website. The program awards these grants on that basis.

Monticello Elementary plans to use these funds for playground renovations, specifically new swings. Combined with the grant the school was awarded by American Woodmark, the school is hopeful that they will eventually be able to supply the children with the new equipment. “We've already spent about $40,000 on renovations," said Monticello's Family Resource Center Director Leslie Randall, who wrote the grant for the Lowe's grant. "We just want to give the students at Monticello Elementary the best we can possibly offer, and ensure that their time spent on the playground is both enjoyable and safe." The school hopes to raise another $60,000 for new mulch and swings for the playground.

Monticello Elementary is very grateful for contributions from American Woodmark and the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant. With the these awards, the school will be able to make their playground environment a better place for students. They also hope to paint four squares and other games on the paved area for children to use during their recess. Additional contributions are always welcome.
