Seniors Learn Admissions Information from UK Admissions Recruiter

University of Kentucky Admissions Recruiter Joshua Palmer visited Wayne County High School to share information with seniors on becoming a Wildcat. Several students met with Palmer to learn more about applying to UK. They had numerous questions that brought them up to speed on everything from transferring credits to scholarship deadlines.

UK has an average class size of 19 students or a 17:1 student to faculty ratio. UK was recognized as a 2017 diversity champion, situated in a beautiful midsized city surrounded by horse farms. There are 16 academic colleges, plus the Lewis Honors College and The Graduate School. Students can take a virtual tour of the campus at

Top students like WCHS Senior Kacie Rose had numerous questions about applying to the Lewis Honors College. Palmer advised her that competitive scholarships and academic scholarship applications are due December 1. In fact, undergraduate admission and FAFSA submission open December 1. He told her that last year; there were approximately 400 spots available to students in the honors program.

Oher students asked about housing and cafeteria options, which open up February 15. Most students do not take the best meal plan, he said. Rooms range from a six styles including a four-person, which is the least expensive to a two bed deluxe option, which is the most expensive. He said students have a chance to mix and match roommate matchups too. Students have an ability to pick and swap in the spring, he said.

The cost of tuition and fees is $12,070 for a Kentucky resident, followed by $12,814 for room and board, bringing the total to $24,884.

He told the group that UK accepts dual credit courses. They take your best ACT score and he encouraged students to take the test frequently.

There are more than 500 student organizations and clubs, so there is something for everyone.

There are all kinds of undergraduate majors in the College of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition, the College of Arts and Science, Gatton College of Business and Economics, College of Communication and Information, College of Design, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, College of Social Work and College of Public Health.

The recruiter said some of the biggest majors at UK are Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, Communication, and Nursing. The Gatton College of Business is a growing area of study too.
