Football Cards Beat Warren East in High Scoring Affair
Friday night was a shootout! The Cardinals took on the Warren East Raiders in their home opener. Both schools came in with a 1-1 record, looking to get above .500.
The game was postponed until 9:10 due to inclement weather. Once underway, things moved quickly. Wayne County received the kick and went three and out. Warren East took advantage by driving the ball down the field and scoring through the air, Raiders 7-0.
Wayne County would punt their next drive as well. An excellent punt by punter Steven Radilla put the Raiders inside the 10-yard line. The Cards’ defense swarmed the Raiders and recovered a fumble in the end zone. Steven Radilla put the extra point through, tied ballgame.
Warren East would score again the next drive. On the ensuing kickoff, Senior WR Aubrey Weaver took it 80 yards for a touchdown. With another Radilla extra point, the game was once again tied, 14-14.
After some back and forth action, Warren East blew the game wide open and took a demanding lead. At the half, the score was 34-21, the Raiders in the lead.
The Wayne County defense came out ready to play in the second half and held Warren East to 6 points. Wayne County put together two successful drives right out of the half, both of which were capped off by Cody Vaughn’s goal line run. Not only did Wayne’s defense keep the Raiders from scoring, but they did some scoring of their own. The Cardinals got two safeties by sacking the QB in their own end zone. Safety Riley Hancock intercepted a pass and took it for six.
In the mid- 4th quarter, Aubrey Weaver sealed the deal with a pick-6 of his own. As the clock hit zero, it was the home standing Cards prevailing, 57-40. Congratulations to the Wayne County Football team on a big win under the lights! Go Cards!
