The Cardinals opened their 2018 campaign with a home victory over the Falcons of Monroe County on August 14th by a margin of 3-0. The opening goal came in the 12th minute from Junior mid-fielder Jordi Santiz. Wayne County netted their second goal of the half with just four minutes remaining on a nifty header from Junior mid-fielder Ben Vickery into the box that was finished by fellow Junior Nick Shearer to set the halftime margin at 2-0 in favor of the home-standing Cardinals.
The second half settled into a defensive stalemate, as Wayne County kept their numbers back in order to preserve the lead. Junior striker Will Wright put one last goal on the board for the Cardinals inside the final two minutes for the 3-0 victory. Senior goalie Nathan Burks earned the clean sheet with great help from his backline defenders; consisting of Junior Ty Kennett, Sophomore Reeve Stephens, Freshmen Jese Tuil Chub and Luis Balmori.
Wayne will be on the road August 21st at Barren County and August 23rd at Casey before returning home on August 25th for the inaugural Cardinal Cup. Wayne will play Campbellsville at 10 a.m., followed by Whitley County vs. Barren County. The consolation contest will be played at 2 p.m. followed by the championship at 4:00 Saturday afternoon.
