The 2015 band season is starting strong. The 71-member band has worked for three weeks this summer on their new show “Aurantia, The Yellow Spider”. The high-energy show depicts how humans think of spiders: We are often fearful when we know there is nothing to be fearful of.
This year’s band is “pretty veteran”, according to Band Director Andy Critz. They are used to the hard work that comes with band camp. The students work vigorously for three weeks, first working on fundamentals and gradually working toward memorization of the new music and choreography. To get to a finished band show, it takes “a lot of tweaking”, says Critz.
It takes a host of people to create a marching band show, and Wayne County Schools is fortunate to have both alumni and band professionals that help design and orchestrate the program. In addition, schedules and a lot of detail work go into the coordination of the camps and season. Putting a band show together is “quite a process” because all of the musicians are doing different things all at once, explained Assistant Band Director Logan Butler.
This is an important year for the band, as it is moving from division 3A to 4A. “Since our school has increased in population, we are moving up. It’ll be a good thing,” Critz stated.

The band is excited to perform this year. As always, they will perform at all home games this school year. Their first exhibition will be Friday, July 31, at 5:30 on the practice field between the gym and the middle school. The public is invited to come catch a glimpse of the band’s plans for this year’s show.
