Cards Up to the Challenge on the Road at Pulaski County

football image

The Wayne County Cardinal football team traveled to 5A Pulaski County Friday night. Coming off a 48-10 loss to Frederick Douglass in the Bob Allen bowl, the team was hungry for a win. The Pulaski Maroons were coming off a big win against Clarksville, TN the Friday before.

The game got underway with a kick return to the 37-yard line. The following play, sophomore QB Brody Weaver completed a slant pattern to WR Aubrey Weaver for a 63-yard touchdown. PK Steven Radilla put the extra point through, Cards up 7-0. The Maroons would answer the following drive with a huge gain on a screen and a counter run by their quarterback. The extra point was no good, Cards up 7-6. After a couple of empty drives, the Cards struck with another score through the air, from Brody Weaver to WR Tito Ruiz. Radilla’s PAT made it 14-6. Late in the second quarter the Cards put together another drive and senior athlete Bryce Howard forced his way into the endzone on the goal line. Steven “Mr. Automatic” Radilla capped it off with an extra point, 21-6. The Maroons would go on a 19-0 in the late second quarter through the third, taking a 25-21 lead. The Cards weren’t done yet, though. Coach Shawn Thompson invigorated both the offense and defense for a fourth quarter run. That’s just what they did.

Wayne County would finish the game running the ball. RB Carson Simpson ripped off big chunks of yardage and converted first downs, setting up Aubrey Weaver for two rushing touchdowns from the quarterback spot. In the meantime, the Cardinal defense stood tall and denied the Maroons attempts to score again. The final score was 34-25, as the visiting Wayne County Cardinals fight and win on the road. Go Cards!

The Cards will play their home opener Friday, August 31st against the Raiders from Warren East. The Cardinals won this matchup 41-16 last season.
