Connie Dishman named Wayne County Schools Summer Feeding Champion 2019
One of Wayne County Schools Food Service employees got a surprise recently when her colleagues gathered after lunch for a ceremony announcing that she was named the district’s Summer Feeding Champion 2019.
Monticello Elementary School Cook Connie Dishman was caught off guard and congratulated for her work not only during the school year, but more specifically for her contributions to the summer feeding program. This past summer, she volunteered to be the backup for Manager Rebecca Crabtree. She worked hard preparing and coordinating meals at the middle school kitchen where the 21st Century Program is based.
“She took on more responsibility and was happy to do it,” explained Nutrition Services Director Kathryn Tucker, during the ceremony. “Connie was able to manage the daily meals without any problems. This successful summer feeding program would not have happened had she not been there to help!”
“Connie is very compassionate about her mission of feeding and serving kids. She always greets each of them with a warm and welcoming smile. She goes above and beyond her call of duty to help everyone. She truly is a HERO to all the kids she meets,” said Tucker.
Monticello Elementary Principal Virginia Cares added, “We really appreciate the smiles you give our students and the fantastic service you provide. These connections that you make with our children means more than you know.”
Dishman began working at school in 2010 as a substitute cook and in 2011; she was hired on a full time basis. She started out in the summer feeding program and enjoyed being around the children. Fortunately, she has repeated her service to the summer feeding program, knowing many of the students. She finds her work very rewarding.
Her work was also recognized at the recent state school food service conference in Lexington. She and fellow Summer Feeding Champions from districts across the state were honored when their submissions were read. Dishman will be receiving a framed signed certificate officially recognizing her contributions.
Each year the school district serves summer meals to children 18 and under within the community. This unique program makes a great impact on the children served. Bridging the gap when school is not in session, these meals are for all children, not just those that have financial need. The meals are not only served at school, camps and Bible Schools; but a mobile unit travels throughout the county reaching youth at different sites.
“We want to start seeing all children 18 years and younger eat with the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP). Wayne County was able to participate with 11 sites within our county during the summer months. We served 2,842 breakfasts, 7,048 lunches, and 467 suppers during May, June and July,” noted Tucker.
Tucker added, “I had the opportunity to participate in the Summer Kick-off event, visit the staff, and participate during the back to school event. I watched the staff smile, have conversations, give hugs, with each of the children. I watched them do much more than just feed the children. Everything the staff did had the child’s needs coming first. This is not a job for them; this is genuine love for what they do. These precious people give that extra effort and really make a difference in our program and in the community. “
