Late afternoon practices tucked deep inside a classroom at Monticello Elementary
School resembled some sort of mini ‘think tank’ as the youngsters tried to cram interesting facts into
their brains. They studied, swapped information, and learned all kinds of academic tips as a
result of this mental exercise.
The team of elementary students prepared for the competition by studying material in
the subject areas they competed in with their coaches. They also practiced their quick
responses by using the buzzer system in a mock contest.
Besides receiving some medals at the competition, the most valuable part of being on
the team was the students’ thirst for learning being satisfied in such a collegiate atmosphere.
Their diligence paid off once they got to the district competition on February 9th.
A very dedicated group of coaches were most proud that their team won the Hume
Sportsmanship Award. A student from each team voted for the school that displayed the best
sportsmanship before and during the competition.

both named Governor’s Cup District Runner Up at Russell Springs Elementary, not to mention
