Wayne County has a new squad of Cheerleaders that have worked very hard to compete and be featured at local school halftime performances. The team is affiliated with the Special Olympics of Kentucky program.
Some of the cheerleaders are members of the local Special Olympics Track and Field Team also, so they are used to competing. During their first guest appearance at a recent Wayne County Basketball Doubleheader in the Rodney Woods Gymnasium, the crowd gave the squad a standing ovation after they performed their regional competition routine.
They had already secured a third place finish at the “Cheers! For the New Year! Cheer and Dance Competition at the SOKY East Region Cheerleading Competition in Richmond, KY on January 27th.
“They did a great job and we were so proud of them,” said Head Cheerleading Coach Megan Lay. “Our squad of girls includes: Megan Hickey, Myra Vaughn, Mackenzie Bone, Amber Roberts, Krista Burchett, Caryl Ann Fletcher, and the unified partners are: Madilyn Foster, Jadden Ball, Haylee Huff, and Haley Burchett.
Lay invited anyone who would be interested to join their team. She said to contact her, with the only requirement for participation being a doctor’s permission slip and an age limit of at least 8-years-old.
“I would love for our team to grow,” said Lay.
“We have been invited to come back to cheer at school halftime opportunities, which we appreciate,” said Megan. “I plan on keeping them in the community as a team throughout the year, not just during cheer season. I’m hoping to do some fundraisers and other things during the summer months.”
She wished to thank their recent sponsors: Phillips and Phillips Atty., Hon. James Frazer, Hon. John P. Jones, Circuit Court Clerk Patricia Lay, Dr. Stephanie Southard, Hickey and Son Funeral Home, Citizens National Bank, Gene Dunnington, Charles Fetcher, Lairs Flowers and Gifts, and Women’s Club of Lake Cumberland.
The Polar Plunge fundraiser for Special Olympics is coming up March 3 at Conley Bottom Boat Dock and several representatives of the cheerleading group are participating. Coach Lay will be joined by Assistant Coaches Kaitlyn Edwards and Arin Edwards; as well as unified partners Madilyn Foster, Jadden Ball and Haley Burchett. Those that are not up for taking the plunge in the cold water but want to be a part of the fun can participate on the Chicken to Plunge squad. So Assistant Coaches Carolyn Vaughn, Beth Corder and Anita Edwards are choosing that route.
“I would love to have as many people to plunge for our team as possible,” she said. “We want the community involved.” They just need to raise the money and can contact me at 606-340-2260 or Taylor Ballinger at 502-695-8222 for more information about the Polar Plunge.
The cheerleaders are traveling to the SOKY State competition on February 17th, where they will perform at Fern Creek High School in Louisville.
