On May 8th, The Diary Alliance visited Bell Elementary to educate children on nutrition and agriculture. The representative that spoke to the students was Senior Manager of School Health and Wellness, Melinda Turner. Lois Bradley’s second grade classes thoroughly enjoyed listening to Turner speak.
Turner went over the importance of beginning the day with a nutritious breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as it gives students the energy they need to get the day started. In fact, breakfast is important for everyone, and will keep the mind alert through the morning. Since school beings early in the morning, school breakfast can help ensure student learning.
She also told the students to remember MyPlate. By having a balanced meal of fruits, grains, proteins, and dairy, students would be able to perform their best at school. As a member of the Dairy Alliance, Turner encouraged the students to include dairy in every meal. Dairy is a great source of nutrients such as calcium that help children grow. Turner also showed a video that taught students about dairy farming and the importance of agriculture.
