The Wayne County Middle School Academic Team completed a successful fall season of league play. The team had a 4 wins and one draw out of six matches with eight other schools.
Each student on the team specializes in a subject like written assessment, quick recall, or math. Elizabeth Hoskins does quick recall, math, and American history. “I like pushing my standards,” she says. She also plays in the band and is on the archery team.
Jesse Stephens joined the academic team after sustaining a football injury. “I like books and Jeopardy”, said Stephens, so academic team was a perfect fit.
Ridge Turpin specialized in American history and pop culture. He was confident about the team’s track record: “We only get better as the season goes on.”
7th grader Sydney Alley has been on the team since she was in the 5th grade. For her, academic team was about expanding her knowledge and her social network. “I like having an opportunity to get smart and make new friends,” she said. The team has also been a lesson in persistence. “Once I choose it, I stick with it,” she added.
The team’s coaches are 6th grade teacher Johnette Warner and 8th grade teacher Lindsey Aguilar. The next step for the team is the Governor’s Cup competition. After winter break, it will be back to the buzzers for these studious kids.
