Wayne County Football Team Defeats Pulaski in First Home Game of Season

Friday night’s football game featured your Wayne County Cardinals versus the Pulaski County Maroons at Jewell Field. It turned out to be a barnburner, as the game was tic for tac to the very end. At the final buzzer it was your Cardinals prevailing 29-27 over the Maroons. Congrats to the football team on the big win!

It was a classic Friday night at Jewell Field, as two highly touted programs squared off. The game was highly anticipated and the fans were highly rewarded. Especially the home team fans as Wayne County battled to victory, 29-27 over Pulaski County. Congratulations to the football team!

Coming into the game, both teams had won their season opener and stood with a record of 1-0. Going back before this season, Wayne and Pulaski have a history. The Maroons owned a 9-3 advantage, but after Friday night’s win the Cardinals have won two straight.

The game started out with PC receiving the ball. Their drive quickly stalled out and ended with a punt to Wayne. The Cards moved confidently down the field capping off the drive with a 16-yard strike through the air from QB Lorenzo Linsey to WR Stetson Simpson. Riley Woods put the extra point through. Cards led 7-0.

Back came the Maroons, answering quickly with a touchdown and extra point of their own. Score, 7-7.

Senior running back German Ruiz obviously didn’t like being tied, as he took the very next kick to the house for 6. The 82- yard return had the crowd roaring. However, the extra point was blocked, the lead remained 13-7.

Both teams had a hard time finishing drives due to the stingy defenses. The Cardinals also put the ball on the ground twice, resulting in turnovers. This was enough to keep them from scoring. The score sat at 13-7 until under two minutes left in the half as Pulaski scored on a big play to tie the game, 13-13. The extra point was a miss and the teams went half with 13 points apiece.

The second half opened up, Wayne County with the ball. The first drive for both teams resulted in punts. It was the second drive for the Cards that put the first points of the second half on the board. It was a 31- yard field goal coming by the way of Riley Woods’ lead foot giving Wayne the 16-13 lead.

The following drive the Maroons worked down the field and a 33- yard TD pass put them up 3. They added the extra point making the score 20-16.

The Cardinals started with the ball near midfield and wasted no time regaining the lead. It took Linsey and company two plays to score. It was a 40- yard completion to WR Aubrey Weaver for the touchdown. Another Riley Woods extra point made the score 23-20.

In the 4th quarter, the Maroons scored first. A big gainer put PC on the goal line where they just punched it in. Advantage back to the Pulaski, 27-23.

With the pressure turned up Wayne’s offensive unit took the field. They didn’t falter at all, taking the ball 52 yards. Two completions to Weaver, a completion to Bryce Howard and a dime to Simpson and the Cards were knocking on the door. With a little over 40 seconds left, Linsey kept it right up the gut for the Wayne County touchdown. Another kick was blocked, leaving the score 29-27.

Thanks to a last stand by the gritty defense the lead remained the same. Time expired and the Cards prevailed!

When asked how he felt about the game, Head Coach Shawn Thompson said, “I felt good. We found a way to win. We didn’t play our best, but we gave effort when it counted.”

The Football Cards travel to Warren East to face former Wayne County Coach Jeff Griffith and the Raiders. Both teams are coming into the game off hard fought wins and stand at 2-0. The game is due to start at 8 o’clock Eastern Standard Time on Friday, September 1.
