WCHS Senior John Rains advances to the state Governor’s Cup Academic competition

Seniors recognized on Academic Team

Wayne County High School Senior John David Rains, son of Karen and David Rains, is once again headed to the state Governor’s Cup Academic Team competition.

Rains placed first in Social Studies at the recent regional level of Governor’s Cup Academic competition which was held in Danville, KY, on February 19.

Rains has continued his school record after having the privilege of competing at the state level on five other occasions. This latest accomplishment makes it six times out of a seven year stretch while attending Wayne County Schools.

Rains and fellow Seniors Kadyn McFarland, Eli Stinson, and Ridge Turpin are avid competitors in academic play. The seniors were recognized at the February Board of Education meeting.

The Wayne County High School Academic Quick Recall Team placed fourth at the regional competition, but did not advance to the state level. They had placed first at district competition, defeating Southwestern. Those team members that competed included: Captain Kadyn McFarland, Eli Stinson, John Rains, Noah Stinson, Sophia Beaudoin, Jacob Haynes, and Samantha Criswell.

This is a special group of seniors and their teammates who have worked hard practicing since the start of the school year. Some of these seniors have also scored in the 30’s or close to it on their ACT scores, have passed AP Exams, and completed rigorous schedules at the high school --- another measure of academic success.

They are coached by WCHS Social Studies Teacher Dean Sumpter, a former WC Academic Team “great” who was a two-time state competitor. This is his first year as head coach and he assisted Jared Criswell the past two years. The team appreciates these coaches’ efforts and ability to challenge these students at the highest levels. They even said they learned more by staying at school practicing together with their coach the first semester, rather than joining league play.

Congratulations to the entire team. Go Cards!
