Wayne County defeated Adair County in a thriller Friday night. The Cardinals got off to a good start and with the help of penalties against the Indians had the lead at halftime 13-6 as QB Wesley Cares scored both touchdowns. In the second half, it was a vastly inspired Adair County team and their rushing attack started hitting on all cylinders. After a 9-yard touchdown by running back Cameron Harmon. Dylan Pierce scored from 4 yards out putting Adair county ahead 30-13.
Wayne County would dig deep and fight back tying the game on a 14-yard run. The Cardinals defense then came through holding Adair in check in the 4th quarter. With just 17 seconds left on the clock, coach Tyler Guffey reached into his bag of tricks. Mason Burchette was in the wildcat formation and handed the ball off to Antowne Dumphord on a reverse but instead of a run, Dumphord chucked a long pass down the middle of the field to a streaking Wesley Cares who made a great catch and was brought down at the Indians 16-yard line. With only 7.5 seconds left Wayne County used their last timeout to bring in kicker Jack Kelsey to attempt a 34-yard field goal. Kelsey had just enough foot to get the ball through the uprights to give Wayne County a 23-20 victory.
The win puts the Cards at 2-0 on the season. During the game, the Cardinals passed for 105 yards and rushed for 217 with Carres gaining 121. The Cardinals defense held Adair County to only 124 total on the night.
