The Wayne County football team set out on a mission Friday night. They were facing
district opponents, Clay County, in their first district matchup. All week long, school spirit was
on full display for homecoming week. Friday night was no different. The fans packed the stands,
and the players came to play.
The game started with the Cards scoring in just five plays. Junior WR Tito Ruiz scored
on a jet sweep to put them on the board. Steven Radilla kicked the extra point through. Wayne
County never looked back.
They surged to a 28-0 lead by halftime. The scores included a touchdown run by QB
Brody Weaver, a touchdown catch by Aubrey Weaver, and a touchdown catch by Michael
The second half opened up to much of the same. Linebacker Lee Shelton said “Gimme
that” as he snagged an interception and took it for six points. On the next offensive possession,
RB Braedon Sloan evaded defenders and streaked into the endzone. Tito Ruiz added another
long TD reception and the JV came in to close the game out. The final score was 56-14. The high
score shows the great work the offense did. However, the Cardinals’ stingy defense did a superb
job to put a damper on the Clay County offense, with the exception of a couple of late scores.
Congratulations to the Cardinal football team on a stellar win over the Tigers! Go Cards!
