It was easy to figure out how the roster would look at the beginning of the 2018 Wayne County Cardinals golf season. All six varsity players returned from 2017 and the Golf Cardinals were expected to be a formidable opponent in a chase for a regional title. What was not expected was the level of performance in which the Cardinals have sustained.
Led by Junior and 2017 2nd Team All-State golfer, Reese Sexton, the Cardinals have won four tournament championships and set the pace to contend for a Regional title the last week in September. The Cardinals team compete with a young competitive squad that includes Juniors Reese Sexton and Kameron Gehring, Freshmen Gehrig Sexton, Gage Gregory, Renan Dobbs, and Aaron Hesse.
The Wayne County Golf Cardinals began the year with a solid performance and tournament victory at London Country Club in the South Laurel Invitational with a team score of 310. The Cardinals narrowly defeated regional rival Clay County by one stroke, led by Junior Reese Sexton with an even par 72. Gehrig Sexton shot a solid 76, followed by Kameron Gehring’s score of 79 and Gage Gregory’s 83.
Wayne County’s second golf championship of 2018 came at Eagles Nest Country Club in the Somerset Invitational. Once again, Wayne County was led by individual medalist, Reese Sexton, shooting a dominant 3 under par, 69. Gehrig Sexton solidified the second spot in the rotation with a 78, followed by teammates Kameron Gehring and Gage Gregory’s scores of 84. Wayne County shot a team total of 315 defeating runner-up Somerset’s 317 and third place Clay County’s 321.
Two days later at Crooked Creek Golf Course in London, Kentucky, Wayne County Cardinals Golf won for the third time in 2018, winning the North Laurel Invitational. The results of the North Laurel Invitational would provide a unique twist. Unlike any other championship in school or state history, Wayne County had both the first place and second place finishers; amazingly, this would be the first time that both top finishers would be brothers in a major invitational.
Freshman Gehrig Sexton shot an even par 72, winning the individual medalist honors and his first high school tournament championship. Gehrig Sexton narrowly beat the second place finisher Reese Sexton who shot a strong one over par, 73. The Cardinals would soundly beat their opponents with a team total of 307. Kameron Gehring would finish third on the team with a score of 80 and Gage Gregory would provide a solid score of 82.
Arguably, the most impressive tournament victory in school history would be held in Cub Run, Kentucky at Shady Hollow Golf Course in the Warren East Invitational. The Wayne County Cardinals powerful performance capped a school record for individual and team scores. Freshman Gehrig Sexton would win the top individual medalist honors and defeat Louisville signee C.M. Mixon in a sudden death playoff with a three under par, 68. Gehrig Sexton would defeat the field, scoring birdies in three of his last five holes in regulation. Sexton would win the tournament in sudden death with a birdie on the first playoff hole and capture his second high school individual championship. The Cardinals squad would establish a new school team record of 292 in route to winning their fourth championship of 2018. Reese Sexton recorded a 73, Kameron Gehring 74, and Gage Gregory shot a 77 to complete the team record and solidify four scores in the 70’s.
The Wayne County Golf Cardinals will continue play with three more Kentucky Invitational Tournaments followed by Regional competition on September 25th.
