Wayne County School Girl’s High School Basketball program will be led by Interim Coach Allen Burchett, following the resignation of Head Coach Tim Pyles which became effective today, December 14.
Coach Pyles has built a strong girls basketball program since he succeeded Coach Wayne Ryan in January 2002. He helped earn the Lady Cardinals an opportunity to participate in the prestigious Kentucky High School Athletic Association state tournament on three occasions in 2002, 2004, and 2007. During Coach Pyles’ tenure, the Lady Cardinals won eight district titles and three regional tournaments, making them formidable competitors in girls’ basketball athletics.
Coach Pyles’ record speaks for itself with 202 wins and 95 loses. His 12th Regional Tournament record is 118-41 and District record is 61-14 over a ten year period. He will continue to serve students in his full time capacity overseeing attendance at the high school, while continuing to improve the steady attendance incline over the past several years.
Wayne County Schools Athletic Director Rodney Woods said Pyles’ colleagues will respect his decision to step down, even though it is a sad day for them after the remarkable job he has done with the program. He said the girls will continue to move forward with Interim Coach Allen Burchett leading them this season. Coach Burchett has served as the Wayne County High School Junior Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach and Assistant Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach since the 1998-99 season. In addition, in the last two years he has coached the seventh and eighth grade girls’ basketball teams combined with a successful record of 51-28. He has also worked as the Gear-Up Assistant Director for Wayne County Schools since January 2000. That academic program has provided rural students with an introduction to college through ACT work, field trips and evening parent meetings.
