Jim Varney Scholarship

UCLA is offering the Jim Varney Scholarship for high school seniors from Kentucky and Tennessee who aspire to a career in theater and/or drama or plan to continue their current involvement in the performing arts during college and after receipt of the degree. The recipient must plan on enrolling full-time in the UCLA College of Letters and Science.

Jim Varney (1949-2000) was a Kentucky native who rose to fame with his portrayal of the character Ernest P. Worrell in TV and films.

The scholarship is open to high school students from Tennessee and Kentucky only. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative 3.75 GPA, major in a UCLA College of Letters and Science department and aspire to a career in theater or drama. The deadline is March 31, 2012.

The scholarship is renewable for four years, provided that the student maintains good academic standing at UCLA.

Applicants must write an essay of 500 words or less that describes their interest and involvement in the performing arts to-date and explains how they plan to achieve academic excellence while pursuing these artistic endeavors and how attending UCLA will help them accomplish their goals.

UCLA is pleased to announce the Jim Varney Scholarship for high school seniors from Kentucky and Tennessee who aspire to a career in theater and/or drama or plan to continue their current involvement in the performing arts during college and after receipt of the degree.  Recipient must plan on enrolling full-time in UCLA College (of Letters and Science).

Eligibility:

Ø  High school graduate with a minimum (weighted or unweighted) 3.75 GPA.

Ø  Submit Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) for Fall Quarter.

Ø  Must enroll in a major in UCLA College.

Ø  Must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 2 and
be eligible for financial aid at UCLA.

Award Amount: 

Ø  Full amount of non-resident fees for room, board, and tuition at UCLA.

Ø  Renewable for four years provided that the student maintains good academic standing
in UCLA College.

Application Procedure:

Ø  Complete the Jim Varney Scholarship application.

Ø  Write an essay (500 words or less, two double-spaced pages maximum) that answers: 
Describe your interest and involvement in the performing arts to-date.  Explain how you plan to achieve academic excellence while pursuing these artistic endeavors and how attending UCLA will help you to accomplish your goals.
(The essay will represent a sample of your writing.)

Ø  Provide a transcript – either official or unofficial.

Ø  Provide a letter of recommendation from a school instructor or administrator. 

Note: Recommenders may mail the completed recommendation separately, but the review committee strongly suggests that recommendations be submitted by the student together with all other requisite application materials.  To maintain confidentiality, letters should be enclosed in a sealed, signed envelope with the student’s name written on the front.
