Tech Design is a class where technology meets entrepreneurship.   The students design and create products using the technology of our poster printer and design software, our vinyl printer and design software, and now our 3D printers and design software.

Students are taking advantage of the approaching Christmas season by designing and offering 3D Christmas ornaments.  The Cardinal ornament is the creation of student Hannah Daniels and is already very popular with students and staff.   Personalized sports ornaments are also available and have been created by several students with the sport, name, and number.   Production of the UK Wildcat ornament will begin this week.   We are also talking to students and teachers about special interest ornaments such as The Grinch and UK Band.

Vinyl production is already successful due to the sale of decals for chromebooks and cars and with Christmas comes the opportunity to market personalized vinyl ornaments.  Glass ornaments are glittered inside and then personalized with vinyl.  Also new to vinyl will be personalized vanity license plates.

We are also proud to offer 3D Lithophane (fancy word for a 3D picture) lamps.   These small lamps are created using a picture provided by the purchaser.  The lamp and the picture are 3D printed. Students are exploring what can be created and printed in 3D.  They are also enjoying learning how to market these products to students and staff.

The class goal is not to make a large amount of money but simply to make enough money to cover the costs of vinyl, filament, ink and other supplies used to create.   The decisions on when and how much material to buy are made by the students.   Students also set the price of items for sale after figuring the materials costs to create the item.  Teacher Marsha Bertram has only one rule for the students - at the end of the year, the class account must be in the black and not in the red.
