The Wayne County Lady Cards Volleyball team ended their season at a high level in the 12th Region Championship game at Lincoln County High School, recently.
The Lady Cards entered the Championship match coming off an opening round win October 15th against East Jessamine by a score of 3-1 and a Semi Final win over Pulaski County 3-1 on October 17th. On October 18th, the Championship bout was predicted to be an absolute knock down drag out battle between two of the Region’s top teams - Wayne County and Southwestern High School - who just so happen to come out of the same district. The two teams had played each other three times this season with the last match less than a week prior where the Lady Cards defeated the Lady Warriors in the District Title match 3-2.
Per usual, the Lady Cards got off to a slow start and the Warriors took set one and set two. Wayne County rallied back and was able to stay point for point. They held on when Southwestern was penalized a point for running out of substitutions.Wayne County won the third set. The fans that filled the Lincoln County gym buckled down and prepared for something they had witnessed from these two programs less than a week before.
The teams battled back and forth the entire time, but in the end Wayne County just could not hold on and Southwestern took set four and the Region Title. Wayne County’s season came to an end with a record of 28-10.
“We are extremely proud of these girls and all the hard work they put into this season. Of course it didn’t end like we wanted it to, but these girls still have a ton to hold their heads up for,” said Coach Sandra Baker.
“Many goals were set in the beginning and every day they came to work in order to accomplish them. We fell short on one, but hopefully that lights a fire for next season. It’s going to take a lot more work, heart, grit and consistency, but we’ll be after it and we will find a way to finish what we started this year,” said Coach Baker.
Coach Baker thanked her seniors; Makena Hatfield, Sylvia Sumner, and Tobi McClane for all their hard work and dedication. “They are sure going to be missed and they have left huge shoes to fill with all the heart and soul they poured into this team the last four years.”
She also congratulated the 12th Region All Season Team- 1st Team: Makena Hatfield, Anneesa Roysdon and 2nd Team: Sarah Gregory and Nicole Hesse.
