Wayne County Cardinals Golf Dominates 10th Region
After Gage Gregory sunk a ten footer for par on the 18th hole, the Wayne County Cardinals knew they had captured their second regional title in three years. Wayne County got to celebrate the victory at Wasioto Winds Golf Course in Pineville, KY just three years after they fell short by two shots for a regional championship at the same venue.
The Cardinals Golf team won the 10th Region Title in dominant fashion firing a team total of 296, in turn, defeating runner-up Rockcastle County by thirteen strokes. Wayne County set the pace early and never looked back. After the front nine holes Wayne County was hitting on all cylinders, the team shot a scorching two under par at the halfway mark and continued their brilliance through the final hole. Brothers Reese and Gehrig Sexton led the team with even par rounds of 72. Junior Kameron Gehring defeated the opponents in his grouping with a 76, and Freshman Gage Gregory fired a personal tournament best 76. Freshman Renan Dobbs also played well shooting an 87.
After the scores had been posted, a couple of Wayne County’s teammates had found themselves in a tough position. A sudden death playoff that included siblings. Brothers Reese and Gehrig Sexton, along with Rockcastle’s Cade Burdette, would post the low round score of 72. The Sexton brothers, along with Burdette, would have to play in a sudden death playoff for Individual Regional Champion. Defending Region Champion, Reese Sexton, would capture the title for the second year in a row with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Wayne County will make the trip to Bowling Green Country Club October 4-6th to represent the 10th Region in the KHSAA State Tournament. Junior Reese Sexton will make his fourth consecutive appearance, Junior Kameron Gehring and Freshman Gehrig Sexton will make their third appearance, and Freshmen Gage Gregory and Renan Dobbs will play in the state tournament for the first time.

Sexton Captures Back-to-Back 10th Region Individual Champion
Reese Sexton found himself in a weird set of circumstances at the 10th Region Golf Championship. After the scores had been posted he would have to defend his title in a sudden death playoff. The weird circumstances would be something that has never occurred before in Kentucky high school regional golf competition, Sexton would have to defeat two other opponents, his brother Gehrig Sexton and one of his best friends, Cade Burdette from Rockcastle County.
For Reese Sexton it was bittersweet. Sexton admitted, that although he enjoyed winning, he was sad and disappointed for his brother. He had mixed emotions defending his title and knows that his brother played just as well as he did. Although he struggled most of the day with his putter and had let some opportunities pass by with missed putts, Sexton made a ten foot putt for birdie on the first playoff hole to win the championship. Wayne County never had a region individual champion until Reese Sexton won it last year, now Wayne County has a repeat champion.
