Monticello Elementary 21st Century Program presents Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr

Beautty and the Beast Jr

Get ready for wonderful entertainment by a cast of 39 local students presenting Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. The local version of the popular Broadway play will be held at the Monticello Elementary School gymnasium on May 1st and May 3rd at 6:00 p.m.

The students have been practicing for the final productions for months after school. Monticello Elementary Music Teacher Jared Duncan is directing the music for the play, with a team of dedicated staff members that include: Anita Peters, Samantha Cummings, Julie Pyles, Panesia Humble, Tammye Sumpter, Sylvia Hicks, Katina Shearer, and Debra Bristow.

For the past several school years, the after school program has provided funds and staffing for musicals like the Jungle Book Jr., Lion King Jr. and Annie Jr. Each production has been a terrific learning experience for the cast members who auditioned for parts and were willing to put forth the extra effort needed to learn their lines and the lyrics to the songs.

This year the musical play is based on the original Broadway production that ran for over 13 years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR., a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. features some of the most popular songs ever written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Menken and Tim Rice.

Third, fourth and fifth graders have been cast to tell the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be
transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson
soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

With many fun supporting roles allowing students to play objects inside the castle, this "tale as old as time" is filled with unique costume and set opportunities. Monticello Elementary Art Teacher Samantha Cummings is the art/set designer for the production.

The play is free to the public. A donation box will be located in the gymnasium for those wishing to support the drama program at Monticello Elementary.
